Can you explain the difference between black and white magic? Dark and light magic? Some say there isn't one, I am curious as to what you all think

I would say that dark, or black, magic is that which is used to cause pain or for other purely selfish motives. White, or light, magic is more for healing and the benefit of others. By purely selfish I mean that the only one who benefits is the caster. If someone chose to cast a spell to help them get a better job so they could provide a better home for their family, that's not selfish.

Dark is that which causes harm to another willfully. Light is its opposite. There is too much of a grayscale to include selfishness or absence of self on these scales, although I would say that pure selfishness leads to darker ways. (Absence of self, however, is just as dangerous. I believe magic itself is neutral. Our actions are the determining force that make magic light or dark.

Sleeper, I agree that there are some spells that we do for ourselves that do not make us selfish. We have to remember to always take care of ourselves first. If we can not take care of ourselves, we can't properly help others either. It's taken my 40 years to figure that out! I would say that dark, or black, magic is that which is used to cause pain or for other purely selfish motives. White, or light, magic is more for healing and the benefit of others. By purely selfish I mean that the only one who benefits is the caster. Very well put Sunna. I love this. It is all about the intent. What was the magic for? When it hurts someone or is purely for selfish purposes, they it does move to the darker side. I have also read that when you start moving to the darker, more selfish side, it can be hard to come back. There have been witches who have spiraled once they get the taste of the dark and the power... the draw of having what you want always... A little scary if you ask me. Dark is that which causes harm to another willfully. Light is its opposite.
